Healthy Ideas for Kids Lunches and Snacks

I have a strong passion for healthy living. Especially healthy children.  I'm sure many of you have figured that out by now.  I finished my Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science in April 2011.  I haven't used that degree directly in my career yet, but I use what I learned and my interests in my and my family's everyday life.

It's really important to me that Kaydin learns healthy habits that stick with her as she grows.  She loves to take her lunch to school on days when she's just not feeling what's on the lunch menu. She gets a say in choosing what goes in lunchbox and then it comes home mostly eaten. Even though her choices are healthy, she definitely isn't deprived of treats, they're just of a healthier version. :)

  • Almond or sunflower seed butter and jelly sandwiches
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Turkey breast and hummus rollups (with or without a whole wheat wrap)
  • Low-fat cottage cheese
  • Natural applesauce- no sugar added
  • Yogurt
  • Fresh fruit
  • Fresh veggies
  • String cheese
  • Carrots and hummus
  • Apples and almond butter
  • Clif kids bars
  • Annie's snacks-organic and whole wheat graham and cheese crackers
  • Fruit leather- all-natural fruit pureed and dried
  • Low-fat cat cookie from Trader Joe's
  • All natural fruit and veggie juice boxes- these aren't the healthiest because some of the juices they contain come from concentrate but they are definitely a better choice than Capri Sun, Hawaiian Punch, Kool-Aid or any other juice boxes that contain a bunch of sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
  • Fresh squeezed juice- by far the best choice for juice. All-natural with no added sugars.

This obviously isn't an all encompassing list but it does cover most of our snacks and foods that Kaydin, as well as me, eat for lunch and also after school (work) snacks.
I recently ordered this from Amazon so I can pack her some of the homemade soups we'll make once the weather turns colder. This way she doesn't have to eat lunches that only consist of cold foods.  Hopefully it really does keep food warm for the five hours it claims it does.
